This stunning African bulb is closely related to the Gladiolus species, and is sometimes included in the genus. Somewhat frost-tender, these can thrive in the sheltered climates around coastal regions and in urban environments, but are rarely 100% reliable in hard winters.
The flowers are very distinctive, and these have been grown as ornamental plants in Europe for centuries.
The flowering stems typically reach 50-60cm in length, and are good for cur flowers as well as mixed borders.
